This term which we use to try an make meaning or the world. We like to make sense of everything, figure it all out, name it and order it. Because if we don't its not right its uncomfortable and not safe, we like the harmony of balance weather you realise it or not.
Binary opposition:
Being human we think in halves, such as:
Good/Bad
Right/Wrong
Light/Dark
Male/Female
Life/Death
Etc
Anything in between that we we call a grey area, an Anomalous Zone. Our life's sit in this grey area because none of us sit on the side of good and evil. We all waver from one side to another.A visual representative of this can be seen in the ying-yang symbol whereby each side (light/dark) both leak into one another and also have a clear solid spot of each other inside them.
Looking at binary opposites in diferent medias:
Frankensteins Monster: Neither life nor Death he sits in the anomalous zone, he kind of represents a cyborg (which are also a grey area) because he is not man or non-human. He is a mixture of man and machine. Representing the fear of technology and the evolution of it. It makes us question if we will eventually become this as we continue to dodge natures plan and science continues to grow.
Superhero Vs Villain
Doesn't a super hero contradict all these binary opposite. They are meant to be all good right?
But without these villains that keep uprising would there be any at all or for that matter would there be any superhero without the villains for a reason.
Dark Knight- Christopher Nolan- The joker
Good Or Evil
I would say neither because who is, i like to think of the joker as a extreme realist, maybe too extreme but even though he is crazy he defiantly speaks the truth in a very logical term. Even the joker knows he needs Batman. Joker Quote Interrogation scene
"You..you complete me."
He is just a man who knows that adding some chaos into a world stuck on order helps to show how small some peoples attempts are to controls matters of the world.
"...upset the established order and everything becomes chaos..."
" Im an agent of chaos..."
